The Skull Crusher Variation You Didn't Know Your Workout Needed https://ift.tt/2MMfrLr

Ian Spanier / M+F Magazine We’re not going to pretend like dragging a bench over to a cable pulley , setting the cable to low , and attaching a bar isn’t a pain—but, man, is it worth it . Compared with a standard barbell , which is heavy at the bottom and lighter when your arms are locked out, a cable—like your wife when you forget your anniversary—causes more tension . This means you can accumulate more muscle damage for more growth over time.  Also, lifting the weight with a reverse grip, palms facing your head, allows you to target the oft-elusive inner head of your triceps, according to Mike Hanley , owner of Hanley Strength Systems in New Jersey ( hanleystrength.com ). How To Do It: Secure an EZ-bar attachment to a low cable pulley. Slide a flat bench lengthwise into the station, with one end a couple of feet from the weight stack.  Lie back on the bench and grab the outside of  the bar with an underhand grip. Start with your arms extended and t...

Practicing Yoga Might Keep Your Brain Healthy https://ift.tt/2spc1rf

Oleh_Slobodeniuk / Getty Yoga has been around for more than 5,000 years and boasts some pretty impressive health and fitness benefits , but a new review of 11 scientific studies suggests that it may be even better for the brain than previously thought.  Scientists analyzed five studies done on people with no yoga experience who were put on a regimen of one or more sessions per week for 10-24 weeks, while the other six studies looked at the brain differences between consistent yogis and non-yogis. All of the studies involved Hatha yoga and used methods like MRI, functional MRI, or SPECT scans to measure the differences in participants' brains. "From these 11 studies, we identified some brain regions that consistently come up, and they are surprisingly not very different from what we see with exercise research," lead study author Neha Gothe, a kinesiology and community health professor at the University of Illinois, said in a release . "For example, w...

The 15-Minute Total-Body TRX Routine https://ift.tt/2rEHt48

Per Bernal / M+F Magazine This is a full-body routine that incorporates a triset and a superset to raise intensity while increasing the amount of work you achieve in less time . “The triset and super-set are what we call ‘mechanical advantage’ dropsets,” says Zack Even-Esh ( zacheven-esh.com ), founder of Underground Strength Gym and head strength and conditioning coach for the Rutgers University wrestling team. “You first perform an exercise in the toughest position, and then you continue changing the body angle to an easier position.” Meanwhile, the mountain climbers will attack the abs and the upper body (isometrically) and raise your heart rate. Larry Wheels Curls Two Human Beings Like It's Nothing https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Larry Wheels has made a name for himself by lifting impressive amounts of weight, and not always in the form of iron plates . The professional Strongman once easily lifted bodybuilder Zac Perna , and recently he upped the ante by curling not one, but two living, breathing humans.  In the video below, Wheels has a woman in his right hand and a man in the left. According to the freak of nature himself, each weighs 70kg (154 pounds). Yes, he’s not using the strictest form while curling them, but it’s still pretty impressive that he’s able to get them up.          View this post on Instagram                   70kg humanbell curls. @teampersonalrecord @_nicoledrinkwater @sharif_2is A post shared by Larry (@larrywheels) on Dec 28, 2019 at 9:02am PST   Curls for the girls? Blue Light May Not Actually Disrupt Sleep, Study Finds https://ift.tt/2PXBKjm

Cristian Blazquez / Shutterstock Staring at the cool-toned glow of your phone screen, known as "blue light," at night is harmful to your sleep patterns, right? It's such a common belief that phones these days typically have some version of a "night mode" that tweaks the screen's color to warmer tones as you wind down for bed. But a new study from the Unversity of Manchester found that the dreaded blue light may not actually mess with your sleep—in fact, it may help you wind down. The study, published in  Current Biology , used special lighting to see how cool and warm-toned lights of the same brightness affected mice. As it turns out, the blue-toned light had less of an effect on the mice than the yellow-toned light when it came to their internal clocks, or circadian rythym. Again, both lights were equally bright. It may sound surprising, but the scientists suggest that since twilight is both dimmer and bluer than daylight, looking at warm-t...
