How to Use Complex Routines to Build Muscle http://bit.ly/2QijJKU

Corey Jenkins / Getty About 20 years ago, strength and conditioning coaches began to search for better ways to warm up their athletes while minimizing the time in order to keep an efficient workout pace. They came up with the complex routine, where a single barbell or set of dumbbells would be used to perform several different exercises strung together to form a routine. The word complex carries the direct dictionary meanings of "an interconnected whole that has many parts" and/or "difficult to perform, analyze, or solve." When loosely translated into gym speak, it means "Get ready for one intense workout." Either way you cut it, if you load up on the weight, you can get into a whole new level of burn and build plenty of muscle in the process. Getting Complex A complex routine consists of several exercises strung together that form either segments of a bigger lift or completely autonomous exercises to get the entire body worked i...

Disabled Strongman Sets World Record With a 1,113-pound Seated Deadlift https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Former British Army Lance Corporal Martin Tye may be paralyzed from the knees down, but he hasn’t let his disability stop him from setting and achieving fitness goals. This past weekend at the North Somerset’s Strongest Man event in Wraxwall, UK, he completed a historic 505 kg (1,113-pound) seated deadlift, setting a new Guinness World Record  in the process. Just for reference, 2017 World’s Strongest Man, Eddie Hall, deadlifted 5 kg (11 pounds) less back in 2017 when he set the heaviest strongman deadlift world record.  Tye suffered his life-changing injury when a suicide car bomber drove into his vehicle during a tour in Afghanistan back in 2009. He has no sensation from the knees down, and he also suffered injuries to his shoulder and lungs. Stricken with PTSD following the incident, Tye eventually began to use sports to help cope with his traumatic experience. In addition to lifting, over the last three years Tye has participated in the Invictus...

Two Resistance-Band Workouts That Take Less Than 30 Minutes http://bit.ly/30l3DEX

Ian Spanier / M+F Magazine You’d be shocked at what can be accomplished with a single piece of rubber . And no, we’re not just talking about rehabbing an injury , working on mobility , or warming up before some other workout. We’re talking about getting seriously stronger, tightening your body , building lean muscle mass, and feeling great.  The humble resistance band has a lot going for it. In fact, when compared with dumbbells and barbells, this flat, thick piece of elastic has certain advantages. For starters, its resistance increases the more it is stretched through a range of motion (what’s called “linear variable resistance”). This provides a training stimulus you can’t get with iron. It also means that you’ll experience less wear and tear on your joints—always a good thing.  “I’d put band training right up there with any free-weight workout in terms of challenging the muscles and producing physique gains,” says Jim Ryno, a personal trainer and gym o...
