How 82-Year-Old Shirley Webb Became a Powerlifting World Champ https://ift.tt/2WnE4le

Kent Webb Everyone has a favorite lift, and Shirley Webb’s is the deadlift . It came naturally to Webb when she joined a gym for the first time at 77 years young, and the now-82-year-old powerlifter boasts a 265-pound PR and is the world champ in the IPF Raw Masters 4 category. To date, she's won 18 medals, including four in national competitions and eight from the two IPF world championships she's lifted at.  Despite her  powerlifting prowess, Webb was hesitant to join a gym when her granddaughter asked her to a few years back. At that point, she could barely get up off the floor without using a chair to push herself up, and climbing the stairs was a challenge. But it wasn’t long before she’d outgrown those small goals. “After about three weeks, my trainer had me getting up off the floor by myself,” Webb told M&F , “and now I can walk up the stairs without pulling myself up. I always hold the handrail for safety reasons at my age, but I can walk up ...

What's Healthier: Wheat- or Veggie-based Pasta? https://ift.tt/36bBiE5

Da-ga/4zevar/julpho / Shutterstock Few meals are as delicious and indulgent as a heaping pile of pasta covered in sauce. Unfortunately, too many bowls of this classic carb can do a number on your waistline . Just one 2 oz. serving of wheat pasta packs more than 40 grams of carbs, making it a surefire way to spike your blood sugar and slow fat loss—which is why brands like Ancient Harvest have been at the forefront of making pasta shapes out of chickpeas and lentils. But are they the real deal? Chickpea elbows have 12 grams of muscle-building protein per 2 oz. serving, compared with 7 grams in the same amount of wheat pasta. So the calories are the same, but you’re getting a more balanced macronutrient profile overall. “In general, bean- and legume-based pastas are an excellent alternative to traditional pastas for anyone interested in increasing fiber intake, managing blood sugar levels, and eating more nutrient dense foods and sustainable, plant-based proteins,” says...

The Total-Body Swiss Ball Circuit https://ift.tt/2WlLFRp

AleksZ Photo / Shutterstock Swiss ball; Stability ball; Physio ball; Exercise ball. It goes by many names, but the big ball that inhabits the corner of every gym is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment at your disposal. It’s not just for your core , either—the ball can be paired with weights or utilized on its own for a variety of upper- and lower-body exercises that will help you build muscle and strength. “It’s definitely an underutilized piece of equipment,” says Jennifer Romanelli , NASM-CPT, RN, a personal trainer and co-owner of Trooper Fitness in New York City. “There's a stigma around it being a tool for physical therapy , rehab, or low impact ‘easy’ workouts, but there is so much more to it.” She notes that Swiss balls are great for hammering stabilizer muscles like the adductors, as well as larger muscles like the hamstrings, quads , and glutes—all things required for lifting heavy weights. “I love combining strength and stability work,” ...

What I Learned From Taking a Rowing Bootcamp Class https://ift.tt/2pjDHMk

Flamingo Images / Shutterstock Rowing dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, but would it have  sustained its longevity  had Zeus been asked to perform burpees between rounds?  What we learned after taking a rowing class At New York City’s Rowgatta : You either row big or row home . “Are burpees involved?” usually begins any boutique class interrogation, and Arielle Childs , one of the founding coaches at  rowing boutique Rowgatta , quickly answered with a resounding yes. As it turned out, adding that bit of higher intensity to a circuit row class helps break up the boredom and also burns some extra calories in addition to the 200 to 400 that rowing would in a half-hour class. “Anything in large doses may at times become monotonous,” she says. “It’s why our class is broken up into chunks and constantly varies.” Childs taught me quickly that rowing can be spiced up through intensity shifts. In Rowgatta’s case, it was thro...

Moviestore Collection / Shutterstock Training like Bruce Lee would be a dream come true for most martial artists — and now, that dream can become a reality. Lee’s iconic Los Angeles gym has reopened close to 50 years after his shocking death. Classes there focus on the art of Jeet Kune Do , the fighting style popularized by Lee.  The master teacher at the gym is Eric Carr, who learned JKD from Lee's former student Jerry Poteet. Poteet was one of Lee’s original students, and Carr said he felt compelled to preserve the Hollywood and martial arts legend’s legacy.  "It’s something Jerry used to say to me: 'You’ve got to complete the circle,'" Carr told NBC News . “The teaching, philosophy, and mindset of Bruce Lee have influenced people and martial arts around the world for decades.” Carr said he worked closely with Lee’s family in the reopening process, and will offer one-on-one classes, seminars, and children’s classes in Jeet Kune Do, which tran...
